7 Ways Andrew Luck and Steve Vinson are Exactly Alike

We all know that when you talk sports in Indianapolis, several names are synonymous with the Circle City of Celebrities.  Peyton Manning, Slick Leonard, Larry Bird. But there are two names that float to the top of any who’s who list of Indianapolis standouts. Here are 7 ways that Steve Vinson and Andrew Luck are exactly alike.

1. Sports Injuries

LUCK: In 2009, during Andrew Luck’s freshman season at Stanford (actually his academic sophomore year), he injured his finger in a November 28 victory over Notre Dame.  Surgeons inserted pins into his finger and his football season was over.

VINSON: In 2011, during Steve Vinson’s 20th college reunion at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, he injured his knee in an October defeat to the active members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.  Surgeons would wait three years to repair the injury, suspending Vinson’s sand volleyball career.

2. College heroes

LUCK: In 2010, Luck led the Stanford Cardinals to a 12-1 record and a bowl victory. Widely considered the #1 NFL draft prospect, Luck decided to stay at Stanford for his academic senior year to complete his degree.

VINSON: In 1990, Vinson led the group of guys on Locust Street to an unprecedented level of wild college shenanigans.  Considered by some as a likely transfer or dropout, Vinson decided to gut it out and stay at Rose to complete his degree

3. Brilliant

LUCK: Valedictorian of his high school class; B.S. Architectural Design at a prestigious private institution; considered one of the best in his field, which is unrelated to the field of his degree

VINSON: Valedictorian of his high school class; B.S. Chemical Engineering at a prestigious private institution; considered competent, which is unrelated to the field of his degree

4. Physical specimens

VINSON: 6’5″ 280 lb; LUCK: 6’4″ 240 lb

5. Good friends

Both close, personal friends of Pat McAfee and Coby Fleener

6. Geographically smart

Both transplants to Indianapolis

7. Good taste

Both like to eat bbq ribs

Shower Up and Do it All Again

This is a side project.  A friend asked me to recall as many lyrics as I can to this song.  We can’t remember who wrote it.  Either Robert or Dave’s brother.

It’s called Shower Up and goes a little something like this.

verse 1:

I told myself this morning that last night just never was

My shirt is covered in dirt and my tongue is covered in fuzz

Surely she should understand just why I stay in bed

But Shirley had to work today to keep her family fed

chorus:

I feel so much older; should be over this by now

But night will fall and it will call me back to it somehow

And I’ll shower up and do it all again

I’ll shower up and do it all againverse 2:

Them cigarettes are tasty when you smoke em by the pack

But what I wouldn’t give if I could have last night back

I know that I will pay some day for all the things I’ve done

Last night I made an ass of myself

But goddamn I had some fun!

chorus:

I feel so much older; should be over this by now

But night will fall and it will call me back to it somehow

And I’ll shower up and do it all again

I’ll shower up and do it all again

I’ll shower up and do it all

Shower up and do it all

Shower up and do it all again.

Or something like that…

How you can tell I’m doing better

How can you tell I’m feeling and doing better?  I missed 2 days of posting.  It’s true.  The fever is gone, the knee is down to a lowish grade throbbing.  That weird thing with the shin pain from the blood dripping down onto my tibia is still bugging me, though.  I have to keep my leg elevated, like, 4/5 of the time.

As reported elsewhere, the doc said I am doing exceptionally well considering what all he did.  The suture in the medial meniscus is apparently the biggest deal.  It’s the part that has me not doing squats, gingerly climbing stairs, and hobbling on crutches for about another week.  Let this be a lesson to you little leaguers – get that ACL fixed as soon as you find out about lest you tear your meniscus.

Storm before the calm?

I think I turned a corner last night.  I was having too much pain, too much swelling, and too much feeling generally crappy.  I popped a Vicodin, put on the cold wrap, and laid back for a couple of hours.  These allowed me to fall asleep.  I woke up this morning (late and with a slight opiate hangover) feeling great.  Swelling down, pain under control, and no fever.  Maybe last night was the injury and illness in their final throes.  I’ve got this thing licked!

Doctor appointment tomorrow…

Andrew Luck 🙂

Small step back

Remember how great everything was going? Well, it’s really hurting tonight. Turned back to the opiates (Vicodin). I’m not really sure what’s up but the incision sights are puffy, if that makes sense. And the pain seems to radiate between incision sites, to the side of my knee, and over to the other side. Taking it easy and icing the thing right now. Tomorrow’s another day.

I wonder if Andrew Luck had this sort of setback…

Andrew Luck and Me

I read somewhere that if you put Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning in your title, it increase click rate dramatically.  So, I’m trying a little A/B experiment.  Enjoy.

Seriously, though, I am just like Andrew Luck.  Here’s how Andrew Luck is like Steve Vinson:

  • LUCK: In 2009, during Andrew Luck’s freshman season at Stanford (actually his academic sophomore year), he injured his finger in a November 28 victory over Notre Dame.  Surgeons inserted pins into his finger and his football season was over.

Star Wars episode VII Trailer

We interrupt your regularly scheduled narcissistic pity party to bring you a pop culture post.

By now, you’ve probably seen the Star Wars episode VII Trailer.  If you’re like me (skeptical and slightly racist), then you probably thought it was fake.  Let me explain.

First, in case you haven’t seen it, watch it:

Now, watch this next movie clip from Space Balls:

Now, go back and watch the Star Wars episode VII trailer again.

That should give you a somewhat disturbing glimpse into how my mind works.  That’s the slightly racist part of me.  The skeptical part of me was invoked by the following:

  1. The segments seemed like they could have been faked.  X-wing fighters, Millennium Falcon, desert
  2. That rolling ball robot thing looks like Marvin the Paranoid Android meets Island of Misfit Toys meets 1970s PBS special.
  3. The land cruiser looks like a refrigerator
  4. Where are the credits?  The studio small print?
  5. The Star Wars logo – it is so simple and so retro
  6. There have been a million knockoff trailers lately
  7. It just looks cheep and not exciting at all

There ya go.  My useless review of the Star Wars episode VII teaser trailer.  What did you think of it?

Short one tonight…

The first few days were, indeed, better than I thought they’d be.  And the days next few days have been about the same.  As in, I feel the same as I did a few day ago.  Slight pain, fatigue, low-grade fever.  I suppose that’s probably normal.

Next appointment is Tuesday

Sorry for the short post.  Or, enjoy the short post…

Lessons Learned

I learned a couple of lessons yesterday.  1) post early.  By the time the day was done and time for settling in, which is when I usually write, I was beat. Tired. Exhausted.  Out of it. So, I didn’t post. 2) Take it easy for another week or so. At least keep the leg up.

Thanksgiving dinner was fantastic.  Family and friends time is always very special.  The food was delicious, the stories and conversation were great.  I had some tasty wine.  And I forgot that I was sitting with my leg/knee below me for about 2 hours.  The swelling was noticeable.  I put my foot up and then realized how tired I was.  It was 8:00.  I still managed to have a great time (with the help of Turkish liqueur supplied by my beloved mother-in-law).  By 9:00 I was beat and ready to be done.

So, we came home and I hit the hay.

Great story, huh? Especially the way I tell it. This counts for yesterday’s post.

Random thoughts

There was no relax phase. My rehab began Monday after the surgery.  I was to contract my thigh muscles and do leg lifts.  Ouch.  Today’s physical therapy (PT) session confirmed why.  If I don’t straighten and even hyperextend my knee in the first few days/weeks, then I will likely never be able to.  I am at straight as of today, thanks to my surgery-day work.  Two more degrees and I’ll be where I’m supposed to be.

After PT today, Constance asked me how I was enjoying my convalescence and relaxation. We laughed.  I’ve been busy and working the entire time.  I said, well maybe I’ll get luck and rupture my spleen or something.  Can’t imagine much rehab for that in the first few weeks.

Another random thought…. I put joking on hold, fortunately for the healthcare workers I’ve been in contact with.  I figure there has been comedy gold, but the only one I’d be amusing is myself.  This is serious business.  Besides, I can feed it all back into my comedy routine.
