All by Myself – original flash fiction by Steven A. Vinson

All by Myself
by Steven A. Vinson
17 January 2012

He felt his way down the hallway in the darkness.  He was out of his room again but he would not wake up his parents.  The last time he woke them up, Dad told him he would be in big trouble the next time.
The accident that killed his brother last year also crippled Mom’s spirit.  Dad became more distant and drank more.
They lived in an old house with old house noises.  But this was a loud crash.  Why hadn’t Mom and Dad heard it?
He smacked his toe into a toy soldier and choked back a shriek.  The toy soldier flew down the hall and slammed into the door jamb.  He froze.  Rustling sounds from Mom and Dad’s room, then silence.  Just turning over.
He continued down the hall toward… what?  Evil or just mischief?
Step by step, floorboards creaking and popping, ever so carefully he felt his way down the hall.
He was so scared.  He wished he could go to Mom and Dad’s room. Jump in bed.  Under those warm, soft, comfortable covers.  Snugly and safe.
Not now.  Not like before.  It’d mean trouble.
Anyway, he had to check out his brother’s room.  He pressed ahead, terrified.  He finally reached the door.  Turned the knob.  The door opened with a groan and squeak.
Mom had left the room exactly as it was last year on that day.  Clothes on the floor.  Legos spread out around a half-finished robot.  Mom and Dad never came in here.  He was in here every night.  But tonight it felt different.
He stepped in and squinted through the darkness.  Nothing out of place.  The robot still half-finished.  He walked across the room to the open window.
The door closed.
“Who’s there?”
“Me.  Just like always.  What’d you expect.”
“You scared the crap out of me.  What was that noise?”
“I’m fading.  I have to go soon.”
“What? Why?”
“My time is almost up.”
“The loud crash…”
“They’ve come to take me back to…”
“Heaven?”
“Something like that.”
“Don’t go.  I can’t make it without you.  Without our talks.”
“You can have my Legos.”
“Why do you have to go?
“Look after Mom.  Comfort her.”
“Don’t.  Not yet.  Please.”
Loud crash again.  Closer.
“Good bye.  Hold on to your spirit.”
His brother stepped back, then vanished.  Really gone this time.
He sat down next to the Legos.  He would have to finish the robot by himself tonight.  And every night.

Go Live!

As a project manager, if you’ve done your job right, you should start to feel pretty useless during go-live. Don’t worry, this is normal.

What is a Leader?

What are some traits of a great leader? How do you know when you are experiencing a great leader?
Let’s look at some outward manifestations of a person that indicates he or she is being like a great leader.
Starting with my declared ways of being (my contract):
I am powerful, authentic, and loving…

POWERFUL
As a leader I enroll people in a vision. I take action to make stuff happen to move the world toward that vision. I give other people a model for being that allows them to shift into leader-like ways of being. Others act because of how a leader is being and what the leader is doing. The doing, by the way is a result of the being. Then the leader, other folks, and the world get to have experiences and tangible results that did not exist before because of the leader’s power to create through being and doing.

AUTHENTIC
A leader does not necessarily master technique. At least not at first. Technique is often seen as a tool set to help the leader express authenticity. A nod here, eye contact there; mirror the other person’s movements – all are generally taught as inauthentic techniques to mimic authenticity.
A truly authentic leader cries, dances, exclaims joy, and is not afraid to look silly. By stepping past the fear of being wrong or looking weak, a leader actually inspires others to be authentic. Others will seek help when needed and will give true, valid feedback. The leader has given others permission to show true emotion, which ultimately leads to deeper relationships and greater results.

LOVING
A leader loves people. Love tempers Power. Love makes power caring. Deep, meaningful love channels great power toward creation of good, helpful things.
A great leader wants for others what they want for themselves. This means a great leader truly cares about people and achieves results by aligning each individual’s vision with the leader’s vision. In this way, the more the leader gives (loves), the more he creates (power).

I want to see your ideas of what a leader is. Send me your thoughts…

Get Real

The podcast is evolving. Dave and I are feeling around for the right blend of preparation and authenticity.
Too much prep and we come across as rehearsed and, frankly, not funny. Maybe a little educational but not in a way that’s different from the thousands of other leadership podcasts out there.
Too little prep and the conversation wanders with awkward moments and silence. It will come across as amateurish and silly.
What to do?
The keys are passion, authenticity, and just the right amount of prep.
We’ll see how it goes.

Say what you need to say

We have no idea how people feel about us. We have no idea why they act the way they do. They have no idea how you feel about them or why you act the way you do. Why are we so afraid?

World class miscommunication

Overheard: “Our ability to jack up communication is beyond reproach”

Seriously, mucking up the message rises to the level of art form for some people.

There’s a podcast in there somewhere.

Real First Post

I’ve decided to leave the WordPress first post to remind me how long it took to actually start this blog.  I mean actually start.  Not sort of start.

Anyway, the plan is to post short blog posts.  I have WADD – writing attention deficit disorder.  I can’t possibly write anything good for more than 30 minutes, which I figure will take about 10 minutes to read, which I figure is way too long for anyone to actually spend time reading.

Therefore, I will be posting podcasts and XtraNormal videos.  They’ll be funny.  And they’ll be enlightening.  You should listen and watch.  You might learn something.  Or you might just laugh your ass off.

Love,

Steve
